How to upgrade and install a new video card
If your interested in finding out more about how to upgrade your computers graphics card. Check out my post ‘How to run 6 monitors on one computer‘. In this post I describe step by step how to determine the compatibility of a new video card for your PC. Also how to install your new card.
Daisy chain or MST hub for 6 monitor setup
A single video card for 6 monitors is rare. Mostly since the introduction of DisplayPort 1.2.
Most newer video cards provide less ports and rely on DP 1.2 daisy chaining and MST hubs to provide the ability to add additional monitors. This has its disadvantages however.
DP 1.2 allows a single DisplayPort connection to daisy chain monitors with DP 1.2 connections. Video cards that support DP 1.2 can also use a MST hub to connect multiple monitors.
The disadvantage of a daisy chain or MST hub setup is the reduction in resolution quality with more additional monitors.
Daisy chaining also requires all monitors (except the last in the chain) to be DP 1.2 compatible.
Similarly, a MST hub needs a video card to be DP 1.2, MST and HBR2 (depending on the HST hub) compatible.
Depending on your existing video card and monitors. It likely simpler and cheaper to upgrade to a single video card for 6 monitors. A single video card for 6 monitors with individual ports doesn’t share bandwidth therefore supports high resolutions for all monitors.
Best video card for 6 monitors
VisionTek Radeon 7750 2GB GDDR5 6M
The VisionTek Radeon 7750 2GB GDDR5 6M in my opinion the best option currently on the market for anyone looking for a single video card for 6 monitors.
This is a really great option for traders wanting an inexpensive, powerful and reliable solution for a multiple monitor setup.
If you’re a gamer then this GPU isn’t going to provide the frame rate performance of other top of the line gaming cards. It’s best suited to users wanting a reliable GPU that can support multiple monitors at high resolution.
This GPU can drive six monitors simultaneously. Each with independent resolutions supported by individual display outputs.
Monitors can operate at different resolution, refresh rate and have different color controls.
Each display can operate at full resolution without sharing bandwidth. This gives the VisionTek Radeon 7750 2GB GDDR5 6M a distinct advantage over other cards using a daisy chain or MST hub setup.
Display outputs
The card features six mini DisplayPort 1.2 outputs. Making it super easy to connect and configure displays. The mini DisplayPort can be converted to DisplayPort using the included adapters.
The card comes included with 4 x mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables. Plus 2 x Mini DisplayPort to DVI dongles.
The mini DisplayPort connections can also be converted to DVI or HDMI. Whichever cable or adapter cable you use. Make sure they’re Eyefinity Compatible and ACTIVE converters.
Display grouping
A really nice feature is the ability to combine multiple displays to behave as a single large display using ‘display grouping’. This is a simple settings feature that spans windows across displays.
The card also uses AMD Eyefinity technology. That features bezel compensation which produces a more continuous image between displays.
Pros |
- Affordable
- No bandwidth sharing – maintain high resolution displays
- Simple solution
- Display grouping using AMD eyefinity technology
- Easy installation
Cons |
- Lower frame rate performance than top of the line gaming GPU’s
Summary
There are few GPU’s available that support six monitors.
Most gaming GPU’s include less display outputs that rely on DisplayPort 1.2 technology to either daisy chain monitors or use HST hubs to build a six monitor setup.
Either of these methods require investment in monitors with DisplayPorts 1.2 or GPU upgrades that support HST hubs.
Alternatively, two GPU’s can be connected to provide additional display outputs. These can be connected using a SLI or crossfire bridge.
All of these methods require additional investment. They also offer their own advantages and disadvantages.
If you’re looking for an easy, reliable and high quality method for building a 6 monitor workstation. Then I think a single video card for 6 monitors often the most cost effective, reliable and better performance option.
The VisionTek Radeon 7750 2GB GDDR5 6M is in my opinion the best single video card for building a 6 monitor workstation.
